SIMPLE // WISHES FOR A NEW YEAR

Dune Grass Festival, Circa 2008 - A celebration of earth + life

All things sparkly and new, that's what I think of when I hear Happy New Year! From champagne to noise-makers, diet plans to weather patterns to tax returns and beyond, there isn't much that a new year leaves untouched. Oh, were you thinking that my "New Year" post is a little late? Then you must have forgot that this is my Blog and I get to write whatever I want. Wink. I have a few hopes of my own for the New Year. Personal wishes, family desires, growth to be seen on an individual and group front.

My motto for 2014? Remember to Love. It's been in the front, side, and back of my mind since I lost my best friend to a hit-and-run on July 5th, 2013. On the 30th of this month she would have celebrated her 30th Birthday - the Golden one.

I'm not done being sad or angry, I don't know if I ever will be. But acting as a sad and angry person won't benefit anyone. If there were only one thing I could take from Kelly (luckily that is not the case) it would be a vigor and enthusiasm for life and all of its people like none I've ever experienced before. This year I hope to live my life with at least a fraction of the adventure and passion that she had. I hope to love as aggressively as a wild animal, create as if I can't fail, + pursue my passions like there is no word end, as well as many other things.

Some acts I'd like to be a part of:

1. I'd like to embrace my big, beautiful body, instead of always trying to change it.
It snagged me my husband, it carried three children, and it housed the heart that carried me through some of my happiest and saddest of times among other things. It's been good to me and it's time that I am just plain good to it.

2. I'd like to grow my mind.
I'm not sure exactly what this looks like yet but I am itching for a hands-on class, part-time job super, super part time in an area I'm unfamiliar with, participation in a book club, unique online certification, or something of the like.

3. I want to take a trip.
Again, this could take many forms, but the desire to travel is alive within me! Maybe Bob and I will finally get to take a "honeymoon", or maybe we will take a family vacation, or it's possible that Spring Break could bring a long weekend road-trip again.

4. I want to grow a love life that is unheard of.
I'm so sick of the movies and TV and books telling me what my life and marriage and family should look like and be. I heard this once and believe it to be true : "The thing that messes us up most in life is the picture in our mind of what it's supposed to be like." I want to establish our own customs, traditions, and ways of life that are honest, humble, and allow us to love the shit out of each other.

Those are my 2014 goals in a nutshell. But not just for this year, for the rest of my life. I see my life as a blank slate and these aspirations simply the first layer in what will hopefully be a multifaceted work of art.

  1. Okay so I think this may be the best list of resolutions...or wishes for the new year...that I've come across. I'm late in the game, too, with making my resolutions. I've yet to sit down and jot them out (still have every intention on doing so). Your list is so refreshing, realistic and is made of the stuff that REALLY matters. Good for you and thanks for sharing!!! -Misty
